Cutting glass:

I'm still surprised at the number of people who work with glass but don't have a good cutting technique. Typically i meet these people when they tell me that their cutter is'nt working well and they need a new cutting head for it.

This is how i learned to cut glass. That said, if your technique is different from mine and works for you, then keep doing it.

Buy the best cutter you can afford. I recommend an oil cutter made by K star. This is a good quality tool at a reasonable price which will last for years. It is a wise investment. You can choose a Pistol or a Pencil cutter, they both work equally well and as you see are held differently.

Before you start it's best to try each to see which one suits. If you can, visit a glass shop, and try both kinds. Notice the angle of the cutting head to the glass, it's the same in both cases. (pic 2 & 3) Begin the cut a couple of millimetres in from the edge of the glass and with even pressure score the glass all the way to the other edge. You will hear a steady "zipp" sound as it scores. Even pressure and constant contact is the key.
A rubber backed ruler is also a good investment. The backing will prevent the ruler from sliding on the glass.
Pick up the glass, and hold like this. This keeps your fingers out of the way.
With upward pressure from your fingers break apart. Practice with clear float.
